When Your Business Isn’t Making Money Yet: What to Do (and How to Stay Sane)
No one talks about this enough:
The season where you’re showing up every day — building, creating, grinding — and still, your bank account doesn’t show it. The season where your heart is full of dreams, but your pockets are full of dust.
It’s one of the hardest, most isolating parts of entrepreneurship — and if you’re in it right now, I want you to know: you’re not alone.
You’re not broken. You’re not a phony. You’re not wasting your time. You’re in one of the most crucial, gut-wrenching, character-building stages of your journey. And while it feels unbearable some days, it’s also shaping you into someone who can handle the weight of real success when it finally arrives.
Let’s be honest though: Knowing that doesn’t always make it easier to survive the day-to-day stress. So let’s talk about it — what to do when your business isn’t making money yet… and how to stay sane while you’re fighting for it.
First: Acknowledge How Hard This Is
Don’t gaslight yourself.
This stage is brutal. You’re putting out your best ideas, your best work, your best offers — and sometimes, the world responds with silence. You watch other people post their “wins” online while you’re wondering if you made the biggest mistake of your life. This is hard. This is real.
And pretending otherwise only makes it worse. Give yourself permission to feel frustrated, sad, discouraged, and exhausted. Feeling that way doesn’t mean you’re failing — it means you’re trying.
Second: Separate Your Worth from Your Revenue
This one is crucial.
You are not your bank account.
You are not your latest sale — or lack of one.
You are not a failure because your business isn’t profitable yet.
You are still a builder.
You are still valuable.
You are still a creator who is bringing something new into the world.
If you tie your self-worth to your income, every slow day will break you. You have to hold onto the truth: You were worthy before you ever made a dime. And you still are.
Third: Get Ruthlessly Practical
Passion is beautiful, but when money is tight, you have to get practical.
Ask yourself some hard, clear questions:
- Am I solving a real problem that people are willing to pay for right now?
- Am I talking to the right audience?
- Am I making it simple enough for people to say yes?
- Am I offering something urgent — or something people think they can wait on?
If the answer to any of these is no, it’s time to pivot — not give up, but adjust. Sometimes it’s not that your dream is wrong. It’s just the strategy around it needs tweaking.
Maybe that means offering a smaller, quicker product or service right now to build income while still working on your bigger vision. Maybe it means cutting costs temporarily to stay afloat. Maybe it means shifting your marketing, messaging, or the people you’re targeting. Staying open and flexible doesn’t mean you’re abandoning your dream. It means you’re fighting smart to protect it.
Fourth: Create a Small, Winnable Plan
One of the fastest ways to lose your mind is to think about everything you need to do all at once.
Instead, build a 30-day plan:
- Focus on one product, one service, or one offer.
- Set a realistic income goal (even if it’s small).
- Map out one or two actions every day that move you closer to that goal.
- Track your tiny wins — not just the big ones.
Momentum isn’t created by thinking bigger — it’s created by moving smaller steps forward every day, no matter how tired you are.
Fifth: Surround Yourself with Truth-Tellers, Not Just Cheerleaders
You need people around you who won’t just hype you up, but will remind you of the truth when you forget it.
You need someone who says:
- “You’re still making progress, even if you don’t feel like it.”
- “You’ve overcome harder things than this.”
- “You’re not crazy — you’re just early.”
You don’t need people who only tell you what you want to hear — you need people who speak life into you when you want to quit.
If you don’t have those people yet, start finding them. Look for entrepreneur communities, writers’ groups, small business meetups, even one or two trusted friends. Don’t battle doubt in silence. It grows when you isolate. It shrinks when you connect.
Finally: Redefine What Winning Looks Like
Winning isn’t just hitting six figures. Winning isn’t just going viral or selling out your product. Winning is:
- Showing up again after a hard day.
- Learning a better way to serve your audience.
- Strengthening your faith in yourself when no one else claps.
Every day you don’t quit — you’re winning. Every time you risk belief in yourself — you’re winning. Every time you adjust, learn, pivot — you’re winning. Even if it’s quiet. Even if no one sees it. Even if it doesn’t feel like it yet. You are building the story that one day you’ll tell from a very different place — a place of victory. And when you get there, you’ll know exactly how much grit it took to earn it.
If your business isn’t making money yet, you are not a failure. You are in the middle of the story, and the middle always feels messy.
The finish line isn’t built for the fastest — it’s built for the faithful. So keep walking. Keep breathing. Keep building. Because your breakthrough might be closer than you think. And when it comes, it won’t just be about the money. It will be about the person you had to become to get there. That’s the real prize. 💙
